WAHTITOH

Where children escape to exist.

Summer as a child consisted of being outside as long as I possibly could even though a typical summer day in Dallas, Texas was 98 degrees. My mom wasn't too fond of my sisters and I sleeping in so each day started at 08:00. I would consistently wake up delirious and soaked in sweat from the treacherous heat wave; But as a kid, none of that really bothered me once I was outside on my bike obnoxiously trying to wrangle my neighborhood friends for a day of mischief. Tag, kick the can, cops & robbers, bike races and hours spent on the blacktop. Camp wasn’t something I was familiar of up until recently.

Camp Wahtitoh, a summer paradise for children to escape reality in order to exist for a few weeks. Here at Wahtitoh I witnessed children sail boats 5x their size, cook restaurant worthy meals, woodwork custom chairs, and zip-line across camp grounds. My 12 year old spirit was starting to show as I ran around like a cat with the zoomies.

Not only did I do all those things, I also made a friend, Charlie. Charlie is a 10 year old charismatic, curious, and witty camper who was captivated by my film camera, showed me how to fold a flag, and taught me a new game called “ARS”. Charlie reminded me what is was like to explore the unknown, live in the moment, and how good I am at tether ball. A summer I’ll never forget.
