The Runarounds

For a year, my team and I traveled between Wilmington, NC, and Charleston, SC, creating videos and marketing campaigns for The Runarounds, a band led by Jonas Pate, creator and director of the popular Netflix series, Outer Banks. I had heard murmurs for months that Pate had been wanting to film a show in Wilmington for years, and now, finally, the opportunity had presented itself. Gradually, our production house became inundated with Netflix representatives, until one day, I walked in to find someone had claimed my desk as their own. I didn’t mind, though, as the chance to work on a feature narrative was becoming a reality. Prematurely, I began to fantasize about becoming a camera operator on this project, given my experience as a camera operator for their concerts and marketing campaigns. It seemed like a natural progression to me, but I was still relatively young in the industry and unaware of the ladder I needed to climb to earn such a title. But as they say, everything happens for a reason, right?

The story is both simple and complex in its overall scope. It revolves around four high school rockstars known as the FurtherMuckers, who are performing at a high school house party. However, when their beloved but incompetent drummer accidentally starts a house fire, it creates a rift within the band. Three of the band members begin seeking a fresh start, they decide to hold auditions, unaware of the potential consequences. As the new band of five forms and senior year draws to a close, each member is faced with choices that could drastically shape their future. Some sacrifice popularity, others their family ties, and some even sacrifice highschool love, all in pursuit of their dreams of rock stardom. In doing so the new band takeoff into the world filled with unknowns as The Runarounds.

As a gimbal technician on the project, I had the freedom to navigate the set with my various film cameras until I was needed for a gimbal shot. During breaks, I connected with the cast, discussing their characters and forming strong bonds over dinner or trips to the beach. After long days, I developed film, embracing the chance to explore analog photography in my personal darkroom. Some days yielded flawless results, while others were happy accidents that helped mold my creative process. Late nights were spent jotting down notes and researching unit photographers such as Andre Wagner, Eli Joshua, Ser Baffo, and Warrick Page. Unlike previous jobs, I began to foster a profound attachment to the project. A genuine contribution to the outcome, a feeling I crave to experience again. Please enjoy the frames and stories that no one ever asked for.

I want to be legendary and make love songs that change the world

A Father’s Blessing

As I sit in my modest living room, surrounded by memories captured in faded photographs and worn-out concert tickets, I can't help but drift back to a time when the world was my stage and the music was my language. I once dreamed of nothing more than strumming my guitar under the spotlight, serenading crowds from Paris to Tokyo.

But the road to becoming a traveling musician was far from glamorous. It was a path paved with endless nights of uncertainty, cramped tour buses, and relentless self-doubt. I learned quickly that the life of an artist is not always pretty; it's a journey filled with highs and lows that test your resilience and define your character.

Yet, amidst the challenges and sacrifices, I discovered the true essence of who I am. Through the music, I found solace in moments of chaos, and in the roar of the crowd, I found a sense of belonging. Each concert, each city, became a chapter in the story of my life, shaping me into the man I am today.

Now, as I watch my son strumming his guitar with the same fire in his eyes that once burned within me, I can't help but feel a surge of pride and nostalgia. I see myself reflected in him—the dreams, the passion, the unwavering determination to chase his own melody across the world.

Though I know the road ahead for him will be riddled with its own set of challenges and hardships, I also know that it will be a journey of self-discovery and growth. And as his father, I couldn't be more proud to stand by his side, cheering him on as he embarks on his own musical odyssey. For I know that in following his dreams, he will not only find his voice but also uncover the true essence of who he is meant to be.

“Amanda, I don’t care if i’m not a billionaire by 30, if I run for congress, or have a great modern art collection! This band is important to me… and I freakin hate golf, Seriously.”

Forge My Own Path

Mom,

I hope this letter finds you well. I wanted to take a moment to express some things that have been weighing heavily on my mind lately. As I approach the end of my high school journey, I've been doing a lot of thinking about my future and the path I want to take.

Mom, I know you've always envisioned me living a "normal" life here in our small town, surrounded by family and familiar faces. And while I appreciate all that you've done for me and the love you've given, I can't help but feel like there's a bigger world out there waiting for me.

You see, Dad's stories about traveling the world as a drummer, playing alongside some of the greatest rock stars, have always fascinated me. The thought of experiencing different cultures, meeting new people, and making music on a global stage fills me with a sense of excitement and adventure that I can't ignore.

I know my early morning drumming sessions have probably been a bit of a nuisance, and for that, I apologize. But please understand that it's not just about making noise; it's about honing my craft and chasing my dreams.

Mom, my last day here will be the day after high school graduation. I know it's not the future you had imagined for me, but I hope you can find it in your heart to support my decision. And please know that no matter where this journey takes me, you'll always be in my thoughts and prayers.

I love you more than words can express, Mom. And I promise that the moment I book a show in London, I'll fly you out to join me in experiencing the magic of the world just like Dad did.

With all my love,

Sebastian
